Prospect Land Trust receives the 2010 GreenCircle Award for its Environmental Achievements on December 9, 2011 by The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The program marked the thirteenth anniversary of the GreenCircle awards program that celebrates voluntary efforts, both large and small, that make a difference in the state of Connecticut. Since the Agency launched the GreenCircle Award Program in 1998, approximately 1000 entities have been recognized for more than 1425 projects that have made a real difference in preserving natural resources and protecting the quality of the state’s air, water and lands. The Prospect Land Trust is proud to be an organization that continues to make a positive environmental impact in the Town of Prospect and the State of Connecticut.

If you too would like to be a part of an organization that has a positive impact on the quality of life in your community and not only cares about today but looks to the future than you should join us in our efforts.

You can start by becoming a member. Prospect Land Trust operates on a calendar year and we are now accepting membership renewals and new memberships. Your employer may be one of the companies that will match a gift made by you. Matching gifts are a chance to make your contribution worth even more. You can consider the Prospect Land Trust in your estate plans; by doing so you would leave a lasting legacy and help us preserve Prospects Natural heritage for generations to come. Prospect Land Trust receives $500 Community Grant from IBM

IBM Community Grants program provides cash or IBM products to eligible community organizations and schools where IBM employees and retirees are actively volunteering, and in support of specific projects. In honor of their commitment along with pledged service hours IBMers are awarded along with their chosen non-profit organization.

This recognition was recently given to IBMer Bill Rinckel for his volunteer work with the Prospect Land Trust. Bill is an on going member of the Prospect Land Trust, the Property Steward of the College Farms Hiking trail and he is also one of the newest members to the PLT Board of Directors.

The grant money will be used for trail maintenance/improvements and any property management needs that may arise in the future at College Farms.

College Farms is located at 29 Cambridge Drive, is open to the public for passive recreation and has a red blazed loop trail that is approximately 8/10ths of a mile. There is public parking and access to the trail located at the end of Yale Farms Lane cul-de-sac. This particular preserve consists of approximately 5.43 acres that was set aside as open space in 1999 as part of the subdivision process. This property has springs and wetlands, mature forests, Mountain Laurel thickets, rocky ledges and an abundance of wild life. It also has a vernal (or spring) pool, which is a rare, and fragile ecosystem that is critical for sustaining many threatened or endangered animal species. In Connecticut these species include spotted, Jefferson’s and marbled salamanders, wood frogs, eastern spadefoot toads, and fairy shrimp. The preserve also provides protected open space in the middle of a residential neighborhood, a benefit touted by realtors that enhances the property values of the entire neighborhood.

It's hard to image, but approximately ten minutes from the center of Prospect, we can find the Yale Observatory located in Bethany! It is the Prospect Land Trust's pleasure to co-sponsor an evening of star gazing with the Astronomical Society of New Haven
( www.asnh.org/ ) on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. At this open house, there will be a full complement of astronomers as well as observatories from which we can view the evening skies. We should have the opportunity to observe Jupiter, a first quarter Moon, and lots of other objects to look at like star clusters, galaxies, nebula and more. There will also be a hands on Meteorite collection. As long as you can see stars from your home, the observatory will be open! So, please plan on joining us for an evening that promises to be a "STELLER" evening!

- Follow Route 69 South.

- Turn right onto Litchfield Turnpike (It will be your seventh right after crossing Route 42.)

November 12, 2011 at 7pm Join us in search for owls at the Prospect Reservoir. PLT was invited to co-sponsor this event lead by the Regional Water Authority’s recreational program. Depending on ground conditions, we may walk a short distance. Wear good shoes and bring a flashlight. Meet at the intersection of Tress Rd. & Cornwall Ave. No pets, please.

Directions Traveling east on Rt. 68 (towards Cheshire), turn right into Chatfield Road. At the end of Tress Road you will see a gate to the entrance of the Prospect Reservoir. On street parking.

Prospect Land Trust's 18th Annual Fall Hike

Mark your calendars and save the date. Sunday October 16th at 2 p.m. PLT will be holding it's 18th Annual Fall Hike. The hike will be lead by Dr. Joel Meisel, PLT President and Professor, So. Conn. State University. The starting point will be at the Regional Water Authority property in Prospect, beginning at the former soccer field on Matthew St., not far from Rt.68. The gate will be opened so cars can park inside.Features of the hike include several different habitats: field/meadow; evergreen and hard wood forest; brook and pond (West Reservoir); part of the Quinnipiac Blue Trail; trap rock ledge; and also the remains of the foundation for an early 19th century matchbox factory which was driven by water power.

CT TRAILS DAY CELEBRATION!

Come join us in celebrating CT Trails Day Sunday, June 5. 200p.m. to 4:00p.m. at Kathan Woods. This 3-mile hike will follow a trail that covers a scenic and historic part of Prospect, featuring wood roads used by teamsters for mid-19th century Waterbury brass mills, part of the original Quinnipiac Blue Trail with "Bluff Head", the original "Loop Trail" on the land trust property, an abandoned early town road, and a 1790 farmhouse. Meet Boardman Kathan and Lisa SanSoucie at Boardman Drive cul-de-sac, off Plank Road (which is off Route 68 nearly 1 mile west of Routes 68 and 70 intersection in West Cheshire). The Prospect Land Trust cordially invites you to attend our 17th Anniversary Celebration. The gathering will feature an informational forum moderated by public television and radio personality, and Prospect Land Trust member Larry Rifkin.

Prospect is a beautiful community. As you drive the highways and byways of our town, it is impossible to ignore or miss the scenic woods, open fields, streams and other natural wonders. Although it was this beauty that attracted many of us to live here, it is a fragile situation. Preservation of this beauty is essential to the character of our town. This forum will explore techniques and strategies successfully utilized in saving open space by two of the most successful land trusts in Connecticut.

Board Members from the Southbury and Cheshire Land Trusts will share experiences that can readily assist our community as well as other local Land Trusts in their efforts to save open space. In addition, local Planning and Zoning, Inland Wetlands’ Boards as well as town Conservation Commissions will find this information useful in effectively addressing their missions.

This timely discussion will feature Larry Rifkin as moderator. Many citizens know him best from his work at Ct. Public Television where “he directed the station’s programming efforts during the most creative and award winning period in its history”. Currently, Larry is host of Talk of the Town on 1320 WATR and WATR.com.

Karen Huber, executive director of the Southbury Land Trust and Janice O’Neill Yusza executive director of the Cheshire Land Trust will serve on the forum panel. Both women will bring a lifetime of expertise to this discussion.

Karen Huber has served on the New Fairfield and Southbury Inland Wetland Commissions, as well as the founding board of the Fairfield Land Trust. Janice O’Neill Yusza has been active in corporate fund raising and securing grants as part of her duties with the Cheshire Land Trust. She also serves on an advisory board within the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven.

At the conclusion of this informational discussion, Larry Rifkin will facilitate a question and answer session concerning what we, as individuals and organizations, can do to contribute to this critical mission.

We hope you will be able to take time to hear what can be done to preserve the natural beauty of our community and what you might do to contribute to this worthwhile effort.

Prospect Land Trust's 2nd Winter Hike scheduled for the Sunday February 6th at 2pm has been canceled. We are looking into the possibility of replacing the "Winter Hike"" with a "Winter Walk" at the Cheshire Rails to Trails section off of Cornwall Ave. same day and time. The Town of Cheshire does plow this section of the trail and it can be a very pleasant walk. If you are interested in participating in a walk please RSVP so that we can keep you updated. They are calling for another snow event on Saturday and we will need to make sure that the Cheshire trail has been cleared.

Each year NSB awards grants to local non-profit organizations. If you have an account with NSB your vote counts! It is a very simple process to cast your ballot for Prospect Land Trust. Last year, organizations needed just 17 votes to qualify for an award. You would have received a paper ballot with your last statement or better yet just go on line and cast your vote (see link below). It takes just seconds. PLT already has 3 votes in just from one household. Everyone who has an account is able to cast one vote. So, please consider participating in this very simple process. Don’t have an account but know someone that supports what PLT is doing please pass this information on to them. With the New Year comes New Year Resolutions. Why not make a resolution to reconnect with what’s most important in your life. Family and Friends! What better way to do this than to put down and move away from all the electrical devices that have become part of our daily lives and instead get out of the house and enjoy the Great Outdoors. Study upon study have shown the importance of being outside, exploring our natural environment, and participating in unstructured play as one of the most important benefits we can give ourselves as well as our family. Prospect Land Trust is continuing with its mission of community involvement by providing many opportunities to do just that in the upcoming year. So, just because its cold outside does not mean we have to hibernate. Bundle up and join us for our upcoming events.

17th Annual Fall Hike: On a beautiful autumn day twenty-four friends and family joined together for a two-hour hike through a privately owned property off of Boardman Drive in Prospect. Hikers traveled along an historic wood road and the now abandoned section of the Quinnipiac Blue Trail. Midway the hikers were treated to cider and donuts by our hosts Boardman and Joyce Kathan with special thanks going out to Charlie Sutton and little Lindsay for all their assistance. They helped make the 17th Annual Fall Hike an enjoyable time for all.
Work Party Planned A work party is planned for Saturday November 6, 2010 at 9:30 am. At this time we will be performing annual trail maintenance to PLT’s Summit Heights property located at 109 Rosemary Rd., Prospect. Our Summit Heights property consists of 3.65 acres that was open space acquired through a conveyance from Robert and Mark Capanna and has a small loop trail that was created by Christine “Tina” Barry as a Girl Scout Gold award project. It is hoped that this property will someday have connections to other open space parcels on adjacent lands owned by others. Public access and on street parking is available at the end of Rosemary Rd. If you would like to lend a helping hand all you have to do is meet us on November 6th. Bring your work gloves, tools, if needed, will be provided.

17th Annual Fall Hike

Looking for something to do on a Fall Day? Why not join us on our 17th Annual Hike! With permission obtained from a private property owner Prospect Land Trust has gained access to one of the most beautiful areas of town. This property was last hiked by PLT back in October 17, 2004.

Hikers will meet at the end of Boardman Drive cul-de-sac, located off of Plank Road in Prospect. We will begin by following an historic wood road and the Quinnipiac Blue Trail (established in 1929 but now abandoned, but still identified). The trail goes over “Bluff Head” and South along the ridge where we will connect to the “Loop Trail” on the PLT-owned Kathan Woods (17.32 acres) property located near Matthew Street. Hikers will than continue back down a fairly steep decline near the SBA telecommunications tower and the abandoned town road (1906). We will continue North along another wood road bringing us back to the Boardman Drive starting point. Midway hikers will be treated to cider and donuts by our hosts Boardman and Joyce Kathan. Some historical tidbits maybe shared along the way, as this is an historic corner of town.

The hike is scheduled for Sunday October 17th at 2:00pm (Rain date October 24). Parking and starting point is located at Boardman Drive cul-de-sac, Prospect. Hikers should war comfortable walking shoes for this two-hour long hike, as the terrain ranges from relatively easy to rugged. Hope to see you there. 3rd BioBlitz

It is hard to believe that the summer is over. We hope everyone had the opportunity to take time to rest and recreate in the great outdoors. In our ongoing pursuit to aid our community in reconnecting with the enjoyment of being outside and having an appreciation of what can be found right in their own back yards, PLT with the leadership of John Traina has held 3 out of 4 planned BioBlitzes at it’s College Farms trail. As of September 11, 2010 193 different species have been identified (7 herps. (Amphibians & reptiles), 31 birds, 3 mammals, 78 plants, 5 lichens/fungi, 69 insects). The 3rd BioBlitz focused on bird identification & late summer flowers. The group was excited with the finding of a wing feather from a Screech Owl and also two owl pellets that were collected for further study. Our 4th and final seasonal BioBlitz for this year will be held in January. Date and time TBA. It will be interesting to see what winter has to offer at College Farms.

Sorting/Identifying College Farms Insects Hosted by John Triana

Tuesday August 10^th at 6:30 pm. Insects that were collected on the 2^nd BioBlitz will be identified with our guest Carol Lemmon, a retired entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station and current President of the Connecticut Botanical Society. The event will take place at the Prospect Library’s Community Room, is open to all ages and no special skills are need to participate. Field guides and hand lenses will be provided.

In September John Triana will be leading the 3rd BioBlitz at the College Farms Trail. Date and time to be announced.

Work Party / Girl Scout Troop

We will be spreading wood chips at the trail head of College Farms this Tuesday (July 13) at 6:30pm. Everyone is invited to help out or you may want to just stop by to meet the girls from Scout Troop 266 and see the work they have already accomplished this work season at the trail.

The Girl Scouts have assisted in reblazing the trail, picking up litter, clearing the overgrown brush at the trail head and the removal of some invasive plants.

The Girl Scouts have also been helping to gather information for PLT's BioBlitz series that is being held at College Farms trail. So far it has been a good learning experience for everyone involved. The Girls are beginning to have a better understanding of the property and the diversity of life that can be found in their immediate neighborhood.

2^nd BioBlitz --- to be held on College Farms trail on July 11, 2010 at 10:00 am

Come join us on our 2^nd BioBlitz as we continue to identify and record all species of living organisms found at College Farms. Our 1^st BioBlitz was very successful as we identified 80 species in total – including 16 animals and 64 plants. Fourteen friends and neighbors participated in the discovery of the diversity of life and the importance of open spaces within their community. PLT is having four seasonal BioBlitz’s at College Farms throughout the upcoming year to help increase the public’s awareness of the variety of life in their immediate neighborhood.

The 2^nd BioBlitz will take place on July 11 at 10:00am. During this visit we hope to find some of the flowering plants of the summer and identify some of the many insects of the woods. Joining us will be Carol Lemmon, a retired entomologist with the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station http://vvv.caes.state.ct.us and current President of the Connecticut Botanical Society www.ct-botanical-society.org. National Trails Day Hike

Sunday June 6, 2010 10am to 1pm

Prospect Land Trust will be joining the planned hike of the Hamden Land Conservation Trust www.hlct.org and Regional Water Authority naturalist, John Triana, Jim Sirch and Andy Brand, on a 3-mile hike through an open, upland forest on Gaylord Mountain in Hamden. This educational hike will help us learn to identify native plants and animals, and also how to recognize invasives. The property to be hiked consists of 51 acres of forest, brush, and ledge, suitable for hiking. The hike is listed as moderate (gently rising terrain with a likeliness to encounter occasional obstacles). New and experienced hikers welcome. Sorry but no dogs permitted. This land is held in conservation easement by HLCT. South Central Regional Water Authority owns the land itself. Public access and parking is available at the end of Deer Hill Road cul-de-sac (Hamden) or if you would like to join us we will be meeting and carpooling from Saint Anthony’s Church Parking lot in Prospect at 9:30am. You are hereby cordially invited to attend the Prospect Land Trust’s 16^th Anniversary Gathering. To be held in the Prospect Library’s Community room Wednesday April 28^th at 7:30 p.m. We will be having a presentation by Paul Rego from the DEP www.ct.gov/dep on Connecticut’s resident black bear population. Connecticut is experiencing a rapid growth in its black bear population. This talk will describe the history of bears from pre-colonial times through today. Black bear food habits, reproduction, winter denning and social organization will be covered. Steps to reduce the likelihood of encounters with bears will be given. Some of the consequences of having this large mammal in our area and the management and research being conducted will be discussed. Paul Rego has been a wildlife biologist with the Wildlife Division of the Department of Environmental Protection for over twenty years. As furbearer and bear biologist he deals with species ranging from muskrats and raccoons to coyotes and black bears. This work ranges from addressing the conflicts between animals and humans to monitoring the status of uncommon species such as bobcats. Paul has worked with the habitat and deer programs with the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. He has a Masters degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Maine at Orono and a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. With the increase in CT’s bear population it is important for us to learn the facts about black bears and how to coexist with them. So please join us for what is sure to be a very informative evening for all who attend. Light refreshments will be provided.

Public Awareness: BioBlitz is designed to increase the public's awareness of the variety of life in their immediate neighborhood and the services these various species provide to improve the quality of their lives. We usually hear the word "biodiversity" in regard to rainforests with their vast number of species. Yet the diversity of life in our own backyards is phenomenal. We take for granted clean water, fertile soil, and air to breathe. Yet these are all the result of working ecosystems filled with species that perform these tasks. From our morning shower to our late night snack, we are supported by biodiversity every minute of the day. So, come celebrate with us: The BioBlitz is a celebration of the diversity of life in our backyards. But why celebrate it? We hear again and again about the negative impacts we've had on biodiversity such as the loss of species and the destruction of habitats. It seems rare to accentuate and celebrate something positive. PLT’s 1^st Winter Hike:

Cold and windy weather could not stop 33 hardy souls from gathering together for Prospect Land Trust’s 1^st winter hike. With permission from the RWA we made our way through one of the most historic and beautiful parts of town. According to local historian Boardman Kathan “The site is one of the first dams and water-powered mills on the 10-mile river.” The twin Prospect reservoirs with a causeway between them was an original road to go from Cheshire to the center of Prospect. The property was once the Edgar Wallace Farm and the old barn is still standing. Hike leader PLT Board Member John Triana who is also a Board Member of the New Haven Bird Club www.newhavenbirdclub.org also discussed the importance of forest management and watershed areas.

February is “National Bird - Feeding Month” - Started in January 1994, Illinois 10^th District Congressman John Porter read a resolution in the Congressional Record making February National Bird – Feeding Month. This observation was established because wintertime is one of the most difficult periods for birds to survive in the wild. Why Feed The Birds? Feeding the birds provides a much needed break from today’s frantic lifestyle that families lead. It is a hobby that is stress free, inexpensive and can bring the whole family together. It is an excellent teaching tool. Children can assume daily responsibility of cleaning and filling feeders. Identify different species of birds using a field guide. A Year in Review

Happy New Year to all our members and friends! The new year is always a time to reflect on the past, take stock of our good fortune and prepare and plan for the future. The past year was a very busy time for PLT. Prospect Land Trust celebrated its 15^th anniversary with a dinner meeting at Addona’s Banquet Room, with 37 members and friends in attendance. Special honors were given to two local Scouts: Tina Barry for the development of “Tina’s Trail”; and Mike Bohuski for improvements to College Farms trail. Junior member Lydia Segal was recognized for her winning Arbor Day poster for the State of Connecticut. Ann Stein presented a proposed Open Space Plan, and author John Sheirer read from his memoir, Loop Year: 365 Days on the Trail, which received the Connecticut Green Circle Award for environmental activism.

Governor M. Jodi Rell sent an Official Statement proclaiming April 22, 2009 as Prospect Land Trust Day, and complimenting “the volunteers and supporters of the group for their hard work, selfless service and dedication to excellence.

In November the Planning and Zoning Commission accepted unanimously the Open Space Plan which had been developed by a subcommittee over the past several years and chaired by Alberto Mimo. On the subcommittee were: PLT Board member Ann Stein; PLT Life Member Gary Baldowski, and PLT members Lois Chicano and Tom Galvin. The subcommittee was complimented for its work, especially its attention to the preservation of historic and archeological resources in the community.

Some other accomplishments of the year included: the first Annual Kite Day at Caplan Park, with 50 children and adults present; a Trail’s Day Hike at College Farms; improvements to Tina’s Trail at Summit Heights and the Blue Trail at Kathan Woods; and a program at the Peabody Museum with an expert on birds and natural history (the latter was co-sponsored with other Land Trusts and conservation groups). Our annual Fall Hike on Regional Water Authority land had to be cancelled because of a storm, but has been re-scheduled as a Winter Hike on the same property on Sunday, February 7^th.

Prospect Land Trust Fall Hike
16th Annual Hike set for October 18, 2009

This year the Land Trust obtained permission from the Regional Water Authority to explore one of the most historic and beautiful parts of the town. The “hike” is along access roads that are used by the RWA, so walking is relatively easy, as it is on level ground. The hike will be lead by PLT Board Member John Triana who is also a Board Member of the New Haven Bird Club.
The hike is scheduled for Sunday October 18th at 2:00pm. We will be meeting at the corner of Tress Road and Cornwall Avenue. Traveling east on Rt.68 (towards Cheshire), turn right into Chatfield Road. At the end of Chatfield, turn right onto Tress Road. At the end of Tress Road, you will see a gate to the entrance of the reservoir. There is plenty of space for parking. Don’t forget your camera and comfortable walking shoes. No pets, please. We'll hike up to a glacial erratic outcropping perched at the top of the ridge. Even if there aren't a lot of birds, we'll get to see some fabulous autumn views. Wear hiking boots as the trail is steep and strenuous in places. Meet at the far eastern trailhead for the Naugatuck Trail on Rte. 42 in Bethany. June 2009 The Great Outdoors Month

Thank you to everyone that joined us for the Prospect Land Trust Trials Day Hike “Take In the Outdoors”. The hike was held at our College Farms Hiking Trail on Sunday June 7th at 1:00pm. It was a day for us to reconnect with old hiking buddies and to establish new friendships. We had a small but nice turn out and I think I can speak for everyone that it was a very enjoyable day. With the heat of the day at the trail head it was refreshing to be in the shade of the mature forest. The group had the opportunity to see interesting landforms and vegetation types. From a distance we were able to see the properties Vernal Pool which is a rare and fragile ecosystem. A vernal pool is important for wood frogs, treefrogs, salamanders, and many other animals/creatures of the forest. It is important for sustaining many threatened or endangered animal species. We also saw evidence of a Pileated Woodpecker who left a row of oblong feeding channels the full length of a tree. At the hikes end once again we found ourselves in the heat of the day sharing freeze-pop’s and exchanging information. PLT’s College Farms property is an asset to the Town of Prospect and its residents because it
provides protected open space in the middle of a residential neighborhood so people have a place to enjoy passive recreation activities such as hiking and bird watching. Prospect Land Trust will be holding different seasonal hikes throughout the year, so keep an eye out for future articles.

"No Child Left Inside"

Kite Day was the 1st in a series of activities to be held by PLT in response to the “No Child Left Inside” movement. The goal is to reconnect children with the great outdoors. This movement is gaining momentum as noted by the Proclamations released by President Barack Obama who proclaimed June 2009 as Great Outdoors Month as part of the No Child Left Inside initiative. “During the month of June, I encourage Americans to pay tribute to and preserve the great outdoors.” Governor M. Kite Day: A Soaring Success!

Prospect Land Trust’s 1st Annual Kite Day was a soaring success. On Saturday May 9, fifty-one “Kids” of all ages enjoyed a day at Caplan Park together. Kites of many shapes and sizes filled the sky while smiles filled the faces of all who attended.
The lucky winners of the free family raffle baskets were PLT’s junior members Rebecca H. (Family Gardening basket) and Annika M. (Family Fun basket). Also winning a basket was Jeremy L. (Family Fun).
Special thanks goes out to all who help make this day a success.

Governor M. Jodi Rell officially proclaimed April 22, 2009 Prospect Land Trust Day in the State of Connecticut for 15 years of service to the Community of Prospect and the State of Connecticut.
“Through its mission to preserve open space and the natural resources of Prospect for current and future generations of town residents, the Prospect Land Trust protects the rural character of Connecticut and continues to make Prospect an attractive and beautiful place in which to live and do business. In doing so, the Prospect Land Trust raises the standards of excellence in the State of Connecticut.”
Prospect Land Trust celebrated this milestone with thirty-seven family, friends, and Land Trust supporters. Special honors were given to two local Scouts, Tina Barry for development of “Tina’s Trail” and Mike Bohuski for improvements made to the College Farms Trail. Also recognition was give to PLT’s Junior member Lydia Segal for her Arbor Day winning poster for the State of Connecticut. To round out the evening Author John Sheirer read selections from his memoir, “Loop Year: 365 Days on the Trail”, which received the Connecticut Green Circle Award for environmental activism. Dear Friends, Fellow Members, and Land Trust Supporters,

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been 15 years since the establishment of the Prospect Land Trust. During this time, the number of properties that have come under the stewardship of the PLT has increased dramatically, but so has the amount of pressure placed on efforts to preserve open space. While your past support has enabled the PLT to diffuse some of this pressure, many challenges lay ahead for which your input will be greatly coveted, and your participation, greatly appreciated. Together, we’re confident that we can work effectively with town officials to help achieve an optimal balance between the competing needs of fostering development while preserving open space for our mutual benefit as well as that of future generations.

To celebrate this key milestone, you are hereby cordially invited to attend the PLT’s 15th Anniversary Dinner and Annual Meeting, where we will:

§ Honor Tina Barry, a Girl Scout who developed a hiking trail located on our Summit Heights property. This trail was created as a Girl Scout Gold Award Project. Also Mike Bohuski who made improvements to an existing trail at our College Farms Hiking Trail. These improvements were part of his Eagle Scout Project.
§ Recognize new lifetime members

What do you do if you're an amateur adventurer and environmentalist who dreams of hiking the Appalachian Trail or saving the rainforest, but you can't quit your day job or abandon personal commitments? John Sheirer created his own project: From May 17, 2005 to May 16, 2006, he hiked the same trail in Somers, Connecticut, once a day, every day. He chronicled the year in Loop Year: 365 Days on the Trail, a book composed of 365-word accounts of his hiking project. Along the way, Sheirer discovered that an obsession with hiking and caring for the same New England trail every day can be surprisingly adventurous--ranging from blistering heat, flooding rain, whiteout snowstorms, early mornings, dark nights, and everything in between. (Plus there's an unexpected love story and a really cute dog.)

John Sheirer (pronounced Shy-er) is the author of the new memoir Loop Year: 365 Days on the Trail, which received the Connecticut Green Circle Award for environmental activism, as well as the 2005 memoir Growing Up Mostly Normal in the Middle of Nowhere, a finalist for the Sante Fe Writers Project Literary Award. He teaches English and Communications at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield, Connecticut, where he has been honored multiple times by Who's Who Among America's Teachers and recently received the Distinguished Service and Educational Excellence Award.

BEST WISHES AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS.

As the New Year begins, we often find ourselves reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future. Part of our thoughts most often will include family and in a broader sense our community at large. Our thoughts also include New Year resolutions with all the promises of making our lives better – both for ourselves and those around us. As a land trust, we too must reflect on our mission that seeks to make our community better. Simply stated, we wish to acquire, maintain, and manage property in the Town of Prospect so that wetlands and watercourses, farmlands, woodlands, and other significant lands can be preserved in their present state, thereby protecting them for their scenic, natural, and historical value, and for educational and recreational benefits for present residents and for all future generations. We are still committed to this end.

Highlights of 2008
We wish to thank Michael Bohuski of Boy Scout Troop 258 for his Eagle Scout Project that involved making several improvements to the College Farms hiking trail located on Yales Farms Lane and Miss Tina Berry, Girl Scout, for her Gold Award Project which she developed our newest trail on PLT’s Summit Heights Property. “Tina’s Trail” is located on Rosemary Road.
The Town of Prospect purchased its first parcel of land to protect as Open Space for future generations. The Nettleton property consists of 4.7 acres and is located off of Rt.42 in the Mount Sanford State Forest. The PLT will hold a conservation easement and oversee stewardship of the parcel.
Prospect Land Trust has been working towards two new possible acquisitions of Open Space. The first parcel is located off of Cook Rd. and the second parcel that is being proposed as an Open Space offering is at 99 Union City Road. Both properties would be gained through conveyances and need the Planning and Zoning Commissions approval.
Ann Stein PLT member continues to work with the Prospect Open Space Planning sub-committee of the Conservation Commission. The groups goal is to present the town with a formal Open Space Plan.

Much of the work that is being done by the Prospect Land Trust has been behind the scenes, but it is our goal for the upcoming year to provide more family friendly opportunities throughout 2009. Keep a look out for future articles in the Prospect Pages that will keep you abreast of upcoming events.

New Time: Meetings to be held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7:30pm in the Community Room of the Prospect Public Library.

A Job Well Done!
Prospect Land Trust’s College Farms Trail

On November 8, approximately twenty Boy Scouts and a half-dozen moms and dads worked through fog and light drizzle to complete Mike Bohuski’s Eagle Scout project at The Prospect land Trust’s College Farms Trail. Everyone had a great time flexing tired and sore muscles to haul wood, timbers, build bridges and install steps on the preexisting trail. The scouts attacked two troublesome areas on the trail; the slippery slope near the vernal pool and the footbridge.
College Farms (5.43 acres) is located at 29 Cambridge Drive. Public access and parking are available for the trail at the end of Yale Farms Lane cul-de-sac. The trail entrance starts at the split rail fence and old field stone wall.

Annual Membership Dues
During the month of December PLT will be mailing membership renewal reminders. Please keep an eye out for this in your mail. Without the support of our membership the PLT would not be able to keep open space in our community for ourselves and future generations. A Picture Perfect Weekend!

On October 11 approximately 20 people participated in the grand opening of Prospects newest hiking trail located at the end of Rosemary Road (off Summit Rd.). Tina Barry created the trail as a Girl Scout Gold Award project. Tina explained her project than lead the group through a wonderful loop trail. Tina highlighted points of interest along the way. The trail has stepping stone paths, sitting areas (benches) and is ideal for beginners of all ages.

On October 12, twenty-five people gathered for the Fifteenth Annual Prospect Land Trust Fall Hike. The hike was lead by Arborist John Dyckman who is also the Land Trust President. As promised it was an enjoyable event for all. With John at the lead the group hiked through Water Company Land (permit required) as well as Land Trust Property. The trail ran through relatively easy terrain (with one uphill section) bringing us to a small pond as well as through beautiful mixed forests. The fall foliage was glorious as the group “journeyed” along natural areas not usually available to the public.

Prospect Land Trust Event
Fifteenth Annual Fall Hike

Save the date: Sunday October 12 at 2:00pm. We will hike sections of South Central Connecticut Regional Water Company, as well as an adjacent Land Trust property. The trails run through relatively easy terrain (with one up hill section) bringing us to a small pond, as well as through beautiful mixed forests. The two-hour hike will be lead by Arborist John Dyckman who is also the Land Trust President. It promises to be an enjoyable event for all.
Anyone interested in joining the group on the hike should meet at the former soccer field on Matthew Street. You will see the parking lot a short distance on the right as you enter Matthew Street from RT. 68. The hike will begin at the parking lot. Don’t forget your camera and comfortable walking shoes. No pets, please. No rain date.

Even though the hazy lazy days of summer are upon us, the Prospect Land Trust is still busy planning for this years up coming events. We are hoping to provide many opportunities for the membership as well as the community to come together (guest speakers, fundraisers, Fall Hike, and CT. Recycles Day, are just a few example of what’s to come!).

Ann Stein, a member from the PLT has been an active participant for the past two years on the Prospect Open Space planning sub-committee of the Conservation Commission. She provided an overview of the work that has been done to date by the committee at the PLT Annual meeting held on April 24th. Presently, they have put out to bid the work of synthesizing the research that’s been collected into an effective document that can be presented to the Town as a formal Open Space Plan.

Unfortunately the Prospect Land Trust’s Annual Hike/Picnic on June 26th had to be canceled due to weather concerns. Our next hike is planned for during the Fall Season. Look for information in upcoming articles on our Fall Hike as to time and place.

Membership Drive continues so if you have not sent in your membership dues yet there is still time to do so. We thank all who have contributed to date and are happy to report that we have 12 Life Time memberships. If you are not a member and would like to become one, membership fees, which fund the land trust, are $10 for individuals, $15 for families and $300 for Life Time membership. Prospect Land Trust

It’s hard to believe that another year has past by and that Prospect Land Trust just celebrated its 14th year. Much has been accomplished and the Land Trust wishes to thank everyone for their continued support.
Members of the land trust have attended numerous meetings with various town commissions, sent representatives to the Annual Conference of the Ct. Land Conservation Council and participated in a forum of the local Land Trusts with the help of the Connecticut Nature Conservancy. Ann Stein, a member from the PLT has been an active participant for the past 2 years on the Prospect Open Space Planning sub - Committee of the Conservation Commission to develop an open space recommendation plan for the town council to be adopted into our town's plan of conservation and development.
The Land Trust has many on going projects that we are excited about. Miss Tina Berry, a Girl Scout, working on her Gold Award began developing a hiking trail on one of our newest properties located on Summit Heights. Boy Scout Troop 258 will be helping with improvements to our college farms property as part of their community service projects and Troop 27 is interested in conducting a hike on the P.L.T. property. On April 2nd a signing ceremony was held at the Prospect Town Hall to finalize the easement associated with the Nettleton property located on Mountain Rd. The land trust will begin to collect baseline data on this property as well as completing monitoring/stewardship reports on all of its properties.
Officials from the Regional Water Authority were our guest speakers at the Annual meeting of the Land Trust. The RWA has identified two parcels of non-water system land in Prospect that it would like to sell. In the next weeks and months, look for articles in The Prospect Pages that will help you keep abreast of the information regarding the sale of an estimated 35 acres of land and what options we (the Town of Prospect, and the P.L.T.) have for these properties.
