Hikers enjoyed a 5.8-mile hike on Sunday, June 3rd. This
hike actually consisted of 3 sections. Starting point was at the small parking
area located on Rt. 42 in Bethany. First stop was the Quinnipiac Blue Trail.
The hikers headed out in the direction of the beautiful Roaring Brook Falls in
Cheshire, Ct. After a quick water break and picture stop the group headed out
once again along the blue trail until it reached its’ second destination.
Guided by pink surveyors tape hikers made their way along what is hoped to be a
future extension of this wonderful trail system. It brought them through a
section of RWA property which is normally not open to the public. The final
stretch was to the Prospect Land Trust Kathan Woods property in Prospect, Ct.
Kathan Woods currently has 2 trail systems and is open yearly to the public. It
is hoped that this property will connect into the Quinnipiac Blue Trail in the
future and become part of a trail system that is well know and traveled by
many.
Hike Leader John Triana not only lead the group along the
trail but also continually stopped for points of interest. Unusual plants for
this area like the wild Red elderberry and Peacock fern were identified. What’s
a watershed and why it is important was discussed. The importance of forest
management and the effects of the Emerald ash bore beetle to mention a
few.
