It is with mixed feelings that the Prospect Land Trust (PLT)
Board of Directors announces the retirement of Boardman (Barney) Kathan. It is
difficult to sum up in words his contributions over the last 25 years of
volunteer service and dedication to PLT. Barney has been an integral part of
the land trust since its conception in 1994 when the founding members held
their first meeting in his home.
Over the years Barney has been a PLT officer, chaired
numerous committees, lead hikes, helped maintain trails, and served as Treasurer
for thirteen years. During his tenure he was also designated PLT’s Historian.
Barney continued to show his commitment to the importance
open space in our lives and community by attending yearly conferences and
workshops. He helped co-host the CT Land Conservation Council Regional Land
Trust Board Summits.
In 2015 the CLCC bestowed Barney with an Honorable Mention
as part of their Katchen Coley Award for Excellence in Conservation.
In a show of sincere commitment to ensure conservation
through open space in the Town of Prospect, Barney is responsible for the
largest property holding to date that has been donated to PLT. Known as Kathan
Woods, it is a 83-acres, beautiful and historically significant property that
will be protected into the future for generations. His foresight has ensured
that Kathan Woods will stay in its natural state and serve as a wildlife
preserve all the while providing for passive recreation within the community.
This year at the Prospect Land Trusts 25th
Anniversary Dinner in appreciation for his many years of dedicated voluntary
service Barney was presented with a certificate commemoration along with a
framed map of the Town of Prospect dated 1856.
