Dear Prospect Land Trust Members and Friends,

The Prospect Land Trust Board has decided to keep open our properties and invite you to go for a hike.

Kathan Woods, in particular, would be an ideal venue for you to get some fresh air while easily maintaining social distance. Please use common sense and maintain social distance when encountering other hikers. It is our intent to provide a welcome relief for those who need to get out of the house.

We have also decided to postpone the presentation on Bobcats, on April 22, 2020. We hope to reschedule in the fall.

Sincerely,
H. William (Bill) Rinckel
Prospect Land Trust President

The Bobcat in CT event is being postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date.

Prospect Land Trust Presents “Bobcats in Connecticut”

The Prospect Land Trust has arranged to have Gail Cameron give a presentation on Bobcats in Connecticut at the Prospect Firehouse on April 22 at 7:00pm.

The bobcat is the only wild cat found in Connecticut and the most common wild cat in North America. The presentation will focus on the natural history of bobcats in Connecticut.  Once considered a threat to agriculture and game species as well as a high value on its pelts the state had concerns that the bobcat population could be over harvested. So, in 1972 the bobcat was reclassified as a protected fur bearer in Connecticut with no hunting or trapping seasons. This is sure to be a very informative evening one you will not to miss.

Gail is a graduate from the College of Agriculture at UCONN and went on to work for more than 44 years at the Yale Medical School. Now retired, she enjoys having the time to hike, bird watch, and care for her many pets. A lifelong Hamden resident, Gail grew up with Sleeping Giant in her backyard. Perhaps that is where her love for nature began. She is a Master Wildlife Conservationist (MWC) with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Vice President and Environmental Stewardship Chair of the Sleeping Giant Park Association (SGPA) and volunteers on multiple projects with Connecticut Audubon. She is also the President of the Hamden Land Conservation Trust and a member of Friends of Brooksvale.

The event is free to the public, no registration required

“Bears in Connecticut”

Prospect Land Trust Presents “Black Bears in Connecticut”

The Prospect Land Trust has arranged to have Paul Colburn give a presentation on bears at the Prospect Firehouse on November 20 at 7:30 PM.

Black bears occur throughout much of the state of Connecticut. Paul is a renowned “Bears in Connecticut” expert.

Each year, bear sightings are reported in approximately 140 of the state's 169 towns. Over 6,000 sightings were reported in 2016. Connecticut has a healthy and increasing bear population, with the highest concentration in the northwest region of the state.

The “Black Bears in Connecticut” presentation focuses on the natural history of black bears in Connecticut, an overview of black bear habitat, diet, behavior, reproduction and current research efforts. It also provides practical recommendations for optimum coexistence with our black bear population.
