On Friday May 25th Girl Scouts from Brownie Troop
63203 earned their Trail Hiking Badge. The Troop met at Kathan Woods and
explored the Yellow Loop Trail. A brief history of Kathan Woods started the
event along with covering basic map skills, trail blaze reading, safety and “Leave
No Trace”. Everyone received a map of the trail and a safety whistle provided
by the Prospect Land Trust.
Once out on the Yellow Trail they had many sightings of
Toads, learned about some of the different types of trees and saw up-close the
damage done by the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle to the Ash trees located in The
Woods. They learned about the 100-year flood plain which is now full of very
large Skunk Cabbage plants. A question asked by the Troop “Why are they are
called Skunk Cabbage?”, was quickly realized when they were given the
opportunity to take a smell of a ripped leaf.
Many in the Troop were very excited about The Woods and hope
to come back to continue their exploration and hike the Blue Trail Loop
next. The event was lead by Lisa SanSoucie
from the Prospect Land Trust, Scout Leaders Stephanie Way and Colleen O’Hanlon.
