WOW, what a great turn out and what a great group to work
with! The 3rd day at the garden was again very productive. In 2.5
hrs and with the help of 15 Helping Hands much was accomplished.
Some 40+ plants were transplanted into their new home. These
favor wetter conditions New England Aster, Shadbush, Spicebush, Meadowsweet,
Steeplebush, and also these plants who like wetlands conditions Joe-pye-weed,
Cardinal flower, Silky dogwood, Winterberry. To date over 100 native plants
have been put into place at the site.
Wildflower seeds were dispersed. Wood chips and rocks were
put in place and more invasive were cut back. Hay was spread over areas of
exposed soil for erosion control along with some sod from the sod pile that was
created 2wks ago. Work also was started on screening the sod for its rich top
soil to be used once again in the garden.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU goes out to the Long River Middle School
students Charlie, Yasmeen, Michael and Evan. Evan, who also represents Scout
Troop 258 along with Greg lent a helping hand today. This is what it is all
about. Bringing the community together to place that has and will continue to
be a rich outdoor learning space full of native plants that will support native
wildlife.
Another Shout Out, because today's work would not have been
possible without the assistance of Mark Cappana and the Town Crew. On 5/17/19
the crew assisted with some of the more major excavation that was needed. This
allowed work to continue at the Garden Site right on schedule. Without this assistance I think our group of
garden volunteers would still be removing sod and shoveling soil!
